DC’s Robin & Batman Series Puts a New Spin on the Dynamic Duo

DC has announced Robin & Batman, a new series with the creative team of Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen – the creators behind Descender and Ascender.

A new series, Robin & Batman, has been announced by DC Comics. This comic will focus on Dick Grayson, the original Robin, and his beginnings. While his story has been told numerous times, this will be the newest chapter in his story – told by a dynamic duo of comic creators.

Robin was first introduced in April 1940 in Detective Comics #38. Since then, he has become one of the most popular comic sidekicks. Dick Grayson was the first to wear the Robin mantle, before being succeeded by four others in the role. Robin’s origin story has been retold repeatedly, though this series will revisit a different part of his early life, with an Eisner-winning creative team behind it.

Robin & Batman has officially been announced by DC Comics. Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen have paired up to provide the latest entry in Robin’s sidekick saga. This will be a three-issue series that begins releasing on November 9, 2021. It will be in prestige format, allowing for a 40-page issue. Variant covers for the first issue will be done by Jeff Lemire and Rafael Albuquerque. Check out a brief preview here:

The world’s first sidekick is just starting out at the side of Batman, struggling to find his own path from personal tragedy to being a Super Hero. It’s an intimate look at the first growing-pains of one of the legends of Gotham City…

Lemire and Nguyen recently worked on Descender and Ascender with Image Comics, with Nguyen winning an Eisner Award on Descender for Best Painter/Multimedia Artist. Lemire won an Eisner for Best New Series with the series Black Hammer. This critically acclaimed duo is putting together a beautiful snapshot of Dick Grayson’s early life that is sure to excite fans of the Boy Wonder. The preview shows him fighting against a couple of random foes, as Batman coaches him from a distance. Robin, who eventually becomes Nightwing, is a great hero in his own right, but every hero starts somewhere. This series will reveal how Dick became the stellar sidekick he once was, before turning into the hero he would grow up to be.

Considering the tense relationship that Grayson and Bruce Wayne have had over the years, this series likely has plenty of mentor-sidekick drama lying in wait. This appears particularly true given young Robin’s hesitance to call in for backup in this fight, seemingly wanting to prove he can stand on his own without the intervention of Batman. This partnership may be one rife with stress, but it is one of the most intriguing in comics. Batman and Robin blur the lines between being crime-fighting partners and a surrogate father and his adopted son. Though it has been retold many times, this latest version could be one of the most compelling when paired with the stunning artwork of Dustin Nguyen and storytelling talent of Jeff Lemire. Lemire has plenty of experience writing superheroes considering his previous work on SuperboyAnimal ManGreen Arrow, and Teen Titans: Earth One. DC fans can check out Robin & Batman on November 9, 2021.
