DeMarcus Lawrence, Amari Cooper on PUP list

As members of the Dallas Cowboys reported for training camp Wednesday, head coach Mike McCarthy told reporters that quarterback Dak Prescott should “be a full participant” in camp coming off the compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle he suffered last October.

Not all recognizable stars will immediately be active.

Per Todd Archer of ESPN, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence and wide receiver Amari Cooper are opening camp on the physically unable to perform list. Lawrence underwent offseason back surgery and did not participate in offseason team activities or mandatory minicamp, while Cooper is recovering from offseason ankle surgery.

“It’s more of a cleanup, so there’s no high concern,” McCarthy said of Lawrence’s third career back operation, while adding “it’s probably more us than him” regarding the pass-rusher’s return to action.

As for Cooper, McCarthy noted the receiver has a history of ankle issues that is causing the club “to be smart” before allowing him to practice. According to Nick Shook of the NFL website, Cooper felt “irritation” in the ankle in late June that left him unable to run and reach an ideal level of fitness for the start of camp.
