GMC Hummer EV Fantasized As Electric Humvee Military Truck

When the Hummer H1 hit the scene back in the early 1990s, it was unlike anything else on the road. Genuinely a military vehicle slated for public consumption, the gigantic off-roader took the Willys Jeep strategy up to a whole new level. While not as barebones as the High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or Humvee, the Hummer wasn’t that far removed from the vehicles used during Operation Desert Storm. General Motors would purchase the rights to the Hummer nameplate from AM General in 1999, spawning the SUV brand we all came to know. Today the gas-guzzling nameplate has been appropriated for use with a new line of efficient electric vehicles, albeit still humongous in footprint. In order to celebrate the origins of the vehicle, one Instagram user has created a rendering of a GMC Hummer EV in Humvee-spec.

GMC Hummer EV Goes Humvee

The Humvee was first introduced into military service back in 1983, and would play a pivotal role in all of the United States’ modern military engagements. Since then, over 281,000 examples of the service vehicle have been built. And while the United States is currently in the process of phasing out the Humvee due to the changing nature of combat, the truck will forever be synonymous with the American military. The GMC Hummer EV isn’t going to fill the outgoing Humvee’s place on the battlefield, but this new rendering does make it look ready for the role.

The Rendering

The design comes by way of Oscar Vargas, who cranks out all sorts of awesome automotive creations on his Instagram. His take on the GMC Hummer EV Humvee is no exception, and came as a well timed Memorial Day nod to our servicemen and women. With its desert sand camo, armored doors, bulletproof glass, Humvee mirrors and gigantic tow straps, this EV looks ready for duty. We really like how well Vargas blended the iconic Humvee design features into the truck, and how rugged it makes the electric vehcile look. Add in the remote controlled machine gun on top of the truck, and we’re sure plenty of service members would love to have a spin. We have to imagine  the added weight of the armor and armaments will cut into the truck’s range however. This thing already weighs 9,000 lbs in street spec, after all.

It is unlikely that we’ll ever see the GMC Hummer EV Humvee in real life, but it’s not impossible. General Motors has its own defense contracting arm, which is actively working on other troop transport vehicles for the U.S. government. Should we continue on this global push towards electrification, it is possible a military vehicle will arrive with the same underpinnings as the Hummer EV. Here’s to hoping that the real thing will look this good, however.
