Hertz Teases Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Rental Car

The 1960s was a glorious time as it marked the start of the iconic muscle car segment. Carroll Shelby made a deal with Hertz to see Shelby deliver his modified Ford Mustangs to the rental car company’s fleet. Providing a chance for many to get behind the wheel of what is now an American icon. In addition, the deal marked the beginning of Hertz’s “Rent-A-Racer” program. Today, you can get behind modern performance vehicles through its Adrenaline Collection, and there is about to be another incredible machine to choose from, which will debut today, May 10th.

Hertz Shelby Mustang GT500 Reveal Imminent

Hertz will launch a new Mustang rental car on May 10, and it looks like it’s going to be a variant of the Shelby GT500. This makes sense, considering that the GT350 is out of commission. A teaser from last week showed off an aggressive hood sporting modified vents. Today, we get a video that reveals more, showing off the car’s sleek silhouette and lighting signature. It also revealed the golden snake badge; the Hertz Shelby Mustang will likely receive other styling tweaks that separate it from the standard model.

Customers who end up renting this extraordinary American icon will enjoy more power than what was offered back in the ’60s. The GT500 has a supercharged 5.2-liter Predator V8 engine under the hood that produces 760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox from Tremec. It’s an absurd combination unique to the muscle car space. And even as the Dodge Hellcat Redeyes have the GT500 on the horsepower numbers, this snake feels faster when you send it down some open tarmac. It just does.

The rental car company hit hard times when the coronavirus pandemic started, causing it to file bankruptcy shortly afterward for its US and Canadian operations. Last October, Hertz emerged from bankruptcy, and it’s already making some big moves. With the upcoming rentable Shelby, we could see some powertrain tweaks if Shelby decides to do so. Additionally, we can expect the car to arrive in the iconic black and gold color scheme from days old and the teasers with plenty of Hertz touches.
