I fought back from cancer and my eldest daughter has stopped talking to me

DEAR DEIDRE: I DON’T know why my eldest daughter is refusing to acknowledge my existence.

She has completely stopped talking to me and walks out of the room when I come home from work. This has been going on for months.

I am her dad, aged 51. My daughter is 17.

I am two years into remission from bowel cancer and I wonder if her behaviour is connected to my illness.

I have talked to her mum about it, as they are like best friends.

She dismisses it as her being a teenager and says that as I am the adult, it is up to me to build bridges.

I have tried talking to my daughter but she is not interested.

Mum has only known this man for one year and only met him once, when he was here for business.

Now she is planning to move out early next year and I can’t help but panic.

DEIDRE SAYS: The teenage years are already a time of emotional ups and downs but having to cope with your cancer diagnosis has made things even harder for your daughter, resulting in her distancing herself from you.

Be patient. She needs time to work through her feelings but do keep reaching out to her.

A lack of communication can lead to frustration and misunderstandings.

Reassure her you love her and things are getting back to normal.
