Man self-immolates protesting ‘move to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu’ | India News

SALEM: An 85-year-old man self-immolated in Tamil Nadu’s Salem district to protest what he called the central government’s move to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu.
The deceased has been identified as Thangavel of Thalaiyur village near Mettur. The man, who had served as the union organiser of DMK’s agriculture wing, quit active politics a few years ago.
Around 11.30am, Thangavel came to the party office in Thalaiyur.
“He placed a letter in front of the party office. In the letter, he stated that the Modi government should not impose Hindi on the state where Tamil is spoken. He also stated that students would be affected if they learned Hindi,” said an officer at Mettur police station.
He doused himself with kerosene and set himself on fire. “He died on the spot,” the official added.
Tamil Nadu labour welfare minister C V Ganesan and other party leaders rushed to the spot. They consoled the family members.
A case was registered, and further inquiries were on.
