Mass Effect: How to Leave the Citadel

It may not be immediately clear to players how to leave the Citadel in Mass Effect. To reach the Normandy, Shepard must access the Docking Bay.

After completing the mission Expose Saren and becoming a Specter in Mass Effect, it is not immediately clear how to get back to the Normandy and continue the adventure. While there are plenty of side missions players can complete on the Citadel, after a little bit of wandering around the station scanning the 21 Keepers or getting the bartender Jenna out of Chora’s Den, Shepard will need to venture into the galaxy to progress the story. As in the classic Mass Effect trilogy, the Citadel in Mass Effect Legendary Edition is sprawling and often confusing to navigate, and there are virtually no indicators to show players how to return to the Normandy.

There are several occasions during which Shepard will need to get back to the Normandy from the Citadel, including after they make a visit to the Med Clinic to sell their extra gear to Dr. Michel for the highest price or purchase the special Specter gear from C-Sec Requisitions. The first time, however, will likely be the most difficult. After becoming a Specter, Shepard needs to find the Alliance Docking Bay. There, they can have an important conversation with Ambassador Udina and Captain Anderson, which ends in Shepard assuming control of the Normandy as its Captain. To reach this location, they will need to find a specific Elevator in the Wards. Here’s how to return to the Normandy and leave the Citadel in Mass Effect.

How to Return to the Normandy from the Citadel in Mass Effect

To leave the Citadel in Mass Effect, Shepard should walk or fast-travel to C-Sec. C-Sec is part of the Wards, so players can find it on the Citadel Rapid Transit menu under Wards Locations or by following the directional signs posted around the Citadel.

Once Shepard and their squad reach C-Sec, they will need to go to the large Elevator near the center. If players face the fast-travel point, it is the Elevator to the right. When they get close to it, players should see an interaction prompt in the Elevator that mentions the Citadel Docking Bay. This Elevator will bring Shepard directly to the Normandy.

If players skipped recruiting Wrex or Garrus, one of them will be waiting for Shepard at the C-Sec Elevator. Before Shepard and their squad leaves, they will ask to join the team to go after Saren. Shepard can accept or refuse this request.

After talking to Anderson and Udina at the Docking Bay, Shepard can enter the Normandy and will have a brief cutscene in the cockpit with Joker, where they can deliver a speech to inspire the crew as the new Captain. Following this, Shepard must go to the Galaxy Map in the center of the Combat Information Center and select a new planet to explore in order to leave the Citadel. Shepard will need to choose whether to go after the colonists on Feros, follow Matriarch Benezia to Noveria, or find and rescue Liara T’Soni to continue the main story.

Figuring out how to leave the Citadel in Mass Effect is significantly trickier than in any other game in the trilogy. In Mass Effect 2, Shepard can simply use a Citadel Rapid Transport terminal to access the Return to the Normandy option, and in Mass Effect 3, the Docking Bay is clearly labeled and more accessible via the main Elevators on the Citadel Presidium.
