Mexico Selection By Concours Mondial De Bruxelles Celebrates Quality Of Mexican Wine

The sixth edition of the Mexico Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles was held in Parras de la Fuente, Coahuila, Mexico on November 16 to 18, 2022. Twenty-eight international wine judges from Mexico, the United States, France, Canada, Chile, Spain, and the United Kingdom tasted and rated a total of 737 wines and spirits. All tasting was conducted “blind” by the judges without any information as to the variety, region, or country of origin.

Recognized internationally for integrity and professionalism, the Mexico Selection competition is organized by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, which is based in Brussels, Belgium. The international panel of judges awarded a total of 160 Silver, Gold and Grand Gold medals to wines and spirits from 17 producing states in Mexico and 2 producing states in the United States. The Mexican states garnering the most medals in the wine category this year were Baja California, with 72 medals; Coahuila, with 30, and Querétaro and Guanajuato, with 16 each. The awarded spirits come mainly from the states of Oaxaca and Jalisco.

This comes at a time when Mexican wine producers are making a push to enter the United States wine market with both excellent quality and affordable prices. The Mexican Wine Council has confirmed that the total production of Mexican wine production per year (as of November 2022) is valued at $2,174,014,500.00 USD with the USA as the main export market. More than 44% of the total 14,580 hectoliters of wine are exported to the USA and 12% are exported to Japan. Carlos Borboa, Director of México Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles stated “There is no doubt, the wine sector in Mexico is booming and as predicted by some of the most experienced opinion leaders, it will continue to grow in the coming years. Today, it is possible to see an industry in clear consolidation, in which large wineries have a place but also small wineries who are the main people responsible for the fact that Mexican wine has taken on so much force in the last years.”

Borboa continued, “It is important to mention that the development of premium wines is not new in Mexico and must continue to develop in the face of more and more connoisseurs, which every year increase the national wine consumption. We are now seeing the appearance of new grape varieties on the market that can only increase the curiosity of consumers. Local drinking is a reality in Mexico that must be accentuated, first because the quality of the wines is only increasing, second, because the increase in the vineyard is exponential and, of course, because Mexican wine has a feeling of national pride for its own people.”

Asked about the availability of Mexican wine in the marketplace, Borboa said, “Mexican wines today are no longer a rarity in the world. Although it is true that very few labels can be found abroad, the world is aware that Mexican wine is a high-quality wine, capable of competing with the great wine producing regions of the world.”

Many sommeliers in the USA and Mexico have begun pairing Mexican wines with both Mexican cuisine and international fare. Laura Santander, a sommelier in Mexico City stated, “The quality of Mexican wine has been increasing radically over the last five years. We, as Mexicans, are understanding that our vast cuisine sometimes works better by pairing it with white, rosé, and sparkling wines. We are still on a journey of discovering new pairings with international cuisine. We understand that we have powerful red wines, and that grilled meat is a great companion. In the meantime, we are definitely having fun trying to find new pairings.”
