Miles Morales Patch Further Improves Ray-Traced Reflections

Patch 1.10 further improves the ray-traced reflections featured in the Performance RT Mode for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

The latest update for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Patch 1.10, further enhances the ray-traced reflections in the title’s Performance RT Mode on PlayStation 5. Insomniac Games launched Spider-Man: Miles Morales‘ Performance RT Mode in a post-launch patch, giving PS5 players yet another graphics option to explore.

Performance and Fidelity constituted the two modes that Spider-Man: Miles Morales had baked in at launch. In Performance Mode, players can navigate the streets of New York at dynamic 4K and 60 frames per second. Fidelity, on the other hand, emphasizes graphical quality over performance, targeting true 4K and locking the frame rate to 30fps. Performance RT, then, offers the best of both worlds, running in a lower resolution at 60fps with ray-traced visuals enabled. After launching a Performance RT Mode for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, it seems the technical wizards at Insomniac decided to see how else they could expand upon the feature in Miles Morales.

According to the Insomniac Games Support page, the latest Spider-Man: Miles Morales update on PS5, Patch 1.10, added “stability fixes and performance improvements.” The changes additionally addressed a motion blur problem that affected certain pedestrians in the open world. But the improvements to “ray-traced reflection quality” in the title’s Performance RT Mode counts as the most notable of the newest enhancements. Unfortunately, the patch notes don’t offer specifics about the ray tracing boosts themselves. A screenshot of the changelog features below:

Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ ray-traced reflections aren’t perfect, as some of them don’t provide an exact one-to-one recreation of scenes in the background. It stands to reason, then, that such instances have been touched up to a degree in the newest patch. In addition, it’s possible that Insomniac improved overall image quality in reflections since players often encountered moments of noticeable resolution drops when eyeing objects through reflected surfaces.

The latter is something the team managed to refine at the end of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s development. Thus, while a few segments in the title’s earlier trailers featured poor quality ray-traced reflections, the day one patch boasted incredible improvements on this front. It seems that whatever Insomniac learned from Rift Apart has also proven helpful in further enhancing what’s on display in the Miles Morales-starring standalone adventure.
