The U.S. Department of Justice has subpoenaed material related to a memoir that Democratic governor of New York Andrew Cuomo authored during the pandemic as part of an investigation into COVID deaths in the state’s nursing homes, people familiar with the situation said.

The Wall Street Journal reported,

Prosecutors working for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn asked for communications related to Mr. Cuomo’s October 2020 book, “American Crisis,” including contracts and materials used to pitch the book to publishers, the people said. They said the subpoenas indicated prosecutors are interested in nursing-home issues in the book, which more broadly recounted the governor’s response to the pandemic.

Republican legislators have alleged that Cuomo’s administration intentionally manipulated and obscured the COVID fatality data, intentionally undercounting thousands of deaths, in New York’s assisted-living facilities in an attempt to shield the governor from political criticism.
