Rivian R1T Production Has Officially Started, Beating Tesla Cybertruck

On September 14th, Rivian’s social media channels posted a video of a speech given by founder and CEO RJ Scaringe before he drove the first customer-bound Rivian R1T out of the plant so that it could be delivered. With that, Rivian has beaten the Tesla Cybertruck to market, as well as other key competitors like the GMC Hummer EV.

Despite several delays to the start of production, Rivian is finally making its way out the door with the R1T Launch Edition. Amazon and Ford Motor Company also back the new-age car company, with Amazon having plans to order Rivian-made vans for its delivery service. A definitive number on how many R1T and R1S pre-orders are out there has been tough to get ahold of.

Rivian R1T Beats Cybertruck, F-150 Lightning, Hummer EV

The Rivian R1T won’t be the only electric pickup truck on the market for long. The GMC Hummer EV is expected to follow up sometime within the coming months, with a “late 2021” start of production timeline. In addition, the Ford F-150 Lightning is scheduled to launch next spring, and the Tesla Cybertruck will come out sometime towards the end of next year as well. Maybe.

The Rivian Launch Edition models of the R1T and R1S come equipped with a large battery pack, and we previously covered the EPA-estimated range that states the truck has a range of 314 miles, and the SUV 316 miles.

The R1T Launch Edition 20-inch or optional 22-inch wheels, unique badge work, and a special Launch Green exterior color option. On the inside there’s heated and ventilated seats, a powered tonneau cover, recycled microfiber headliner, 360-degree audio and perforated vegan leather seating with patterned stitching, as well as compass yellow interior accents and Chilewich floor mats. A special Launch Green exterior color will also be offered on this model.

The Rivian R1T Launch Edition is priced from $75,000 USD. The base model promises to start at $67,500 USD, before any options.

We don’t expect to see production to ramp up until January 2022, as Rivian is only focusing on the R1T Launch Editions at the moment.
