With Tuesday night’s Yankees-Astros game tied at three runs apiece in the bottom of the sixth inning and the bases loaded for New York, a DJ LeMahieu single set off a series of events that would see both Rougned Odor and Martín Maldonado exit the game after a scary collision at home plate.
LeMahieu knocked a ball towards Houston third baseman Alex Bregman, who attempted to make a tough play to get the slugger out at first, but could not execute the throw and it skittered beyond the reach first of baseman Yuli Gurriel. As Gurriel attempted to wrangle the ball, both Gleyber Torres and Kyle Higashioka scored for the Yankees, and he threw home in an attempt to get Odor out at the plate.
Maldonado received the ball, but Odor’s left knee collided with the catcher’s shoulder and head area upon his arrival at the plate. After an extended injury timeout, during which both players were attended to by trainers, they left the game. Odor needed help walking at first, but appeared to be putting normal pressure on his knee in the dugout after a few moments.
Jason Castro would replace Maldonado behind the plate for the Astros, with Tyler Wade replacing Odor at second base in the top of the next inning. There has been no update from either club on the injuries.
