Social media cos to file action-taken reports each month | India News

NEW DELHI: Social media companies such as Facebook, Google, WhatsApp, Twitter and YouTube will be publishing monthly transparency reports on their websites in India in line with the new IT rules. This would detail the action undertaken by the companies to remove unlawful content and listen to user grievances.
Google was the first to come out with its report on Wednesday and Facebook group will announce its findings in two parts — the first on Friday, and the second on July15.
In its transparency report, Google revealed that it had received 27,762 complaints from users in India during the past one month, of which as many as 96% were related to copyright. The rest were related to trademark, defamation, legal, counterfeit and circumvention.
Based on this, it removed 59,350 URLs, the number being more than the complaints received since a single complaint may specify multiple items that potentially relate to the same or different pieces of content. “We evaluate content reported to us under our community norms, content policies and /or legal policies. Based on this review, removal action may be taken,” Google said.
FB group said its reports will contain details of content that it has removed proactively. It will be for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. “Some categories that we report are adult nudity and sexual activity, bullying and harassment among others,” it said. TNN
