The sports world is mourning the loss of legendary NFL coach John Madden, who died on Tuesday at the age of 85. It would be difficult to overstate just how singularly important Madden was to the NFL. From leading the Oakland Raiders to a 32-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl XI to then becoming the gold standard for sports color commentators and then lending his name and image to what would become arguably the greatest sports video game of all time, Madden was simply synonymous with NFL football. Shortly after news broke of Madden’s death, tributes began pouring in from all corners of the sports world, a testament to the man whose shadow loomed large over the game for more than five decades.
