It was reported last month that the NFL will earn $10 billion annually from new media rights deals that officially begin at the start of the 2023 season and include Amazon Prime Video becoming the exclusive home of “Thursday Night Football” broadcasts.
Following this year’s NFL Draft, it’s now known that one aspect of that agreement will kick in a year early.
The NFL announced Monday that “TNF” broadcasts will move exclusively to Amazon starting with the 2022 campaign. Such games will, thus, no longer be on NFL Network or Fox after the upcoming season. John Ourand of Sports Business Journal adds that Amazon’s 11-year agreement with the NFL is worth an average of $1.2 billion per year.
It’s worth noting that local fans still won’t be shut out of seeing their teams via free television networks. As is the case with current “Monday Night Football” and NFL Network “TNF” games, contests in 2022 will be shown on over-the-air TV in the broadcast markets of the participating clubs.
Football diehards who don’t share markets with their favorite franchises are now on notice that they have about a year and a half to land the best high-speed Internet service available before Amazon games kick-off.
