Watch Rimac Nevera Easily Beat Tesla’s Model S Plaid In A Drag Race

Rimac’s upcoming Nevera hypercar was pitted against Tesla’s Model S Plaid. The Nevera easily dominated the Plaid in three quarter-mile races.

Racers pitted the upcoming 2022 Rimac Nevera against Tesla’s Model S Plaid in a quarter-mile drag race, and the Nevera easily overcame the Model S in all three races. The Model S Plaid was teased during Tesla’s ‘Battery Day’ event, with a track demo that showed the new model crushing the benchmarks set by Lucid Motors. Having launched in June, The Model S Plaid is one of the fastest consumer cars in production. Tesla CEO Elon Musk boasted about the car’s ability to go from 0-60 mph in less than two seconds at a launch event held in the company’s factory in Fremont, California.

Tesla has since paraded the Model S Plaid at several press events showcasing the car’s performance. Jay Leno even broke the quarter-mile speed record set by the Bugatti Chiron when filming for the sixth season of his show Jay Leno’s Garage. So even though the Model S Plaid Plus has reportedly been canceled, the model on the consumer market has impressed several car enthusiasts.

Not content to let Tesla hog the limelight, competing car manufacturer Rimac allowed the crew at DragTimes to take the new 2022 Nevera out onto a track where they pitted it against a rented Model S Plaid. During the three races, the Model S Plaid was never able to keep up with the Nevera, much less gain a lead. The Model S Plaid only took a significant lead during the first race, when the driver of the Nevera took .3 more seconds to get his car moving after the light turned green. However, the Nevera consistently hit a top speed of 166 mph, while the Model S Plaid topped out at 152 mph. On its best race, the Model S Plaid was able to reach 60 mph in 1.493 seconds, but the Nevera’s worst time to reach 60 mph was 1.463 seconds.

What’s This Bad Boy Got Under The Hood?

When looking at the technical specifications for both cars, it is pretty obvious the Model S Plaid was outclassed. The difference in power is almost 900 HP in favor of the Nevera. The Nevera website advertises that the car can cross the quarter-mile threshold in 8.6 seconds, which is almost a full second quicker than the Model S Plaid. And the top speed of each vehicle also favors the Nevera, which can hit 258 mph while the Model S Plaid maxes out at 200 mph.

All this really means is now Tesla has a target to beat when the company wants to pitch the next version of its premium car line to consumers. Because even though consumers might be excited by the Nevera’s impressive specs, the car is listed at a cool $2.4 million. For that price, it should probably also fly. And even though the Model S Plaid is perhaps just as excessive in different ways, it is valued at a much more reasonable starting price of $129,990. So while matching the performance of the Nevera will be a target for Tesla’s engineers, the company is not going to suffer any lost sales to Rimac’s hypercar.
