From classics like Dragon Ball and Naruto to newer series like My Hero Academia, anime offers some of the most compelling protagonists on television. What typically unites these leads is an unparalleled passion for whatever task they’ve set out to do and a lot of growth throughout the series — but there are plenty of traits that set them apart as well.
While characters like My Hero‘s Midoyira or Demonslayer‘s Tanjiro use their wits to survive, protagonists like Dragon Ball’s Goku rely on brawn. It’s traits like these that were used to determine which zodiac signs these 12 anime leads would represent.
Updated by Amanda Bruce on August 29, 2021: So many anime series have their own detailed mythologies that western astrology isn’t often a big part of their shows. That doesn’t mean fans interested in astrology won’t be able to connect their favorite anime characters to the personality traits associated with their own zodiac signs. Though many of the following anime protagonists are from series that involve special abilities, or even magic, the heroes are all very different from one another.
12 Aquarius: Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass)
Lelouch from Code Geass is intelligent, calculating, and idealistic, and all those traits align with the qualities of an Aquarius.
Although Lelouch embodies many of the better qualities of an Aquarius (like that idealism and focus on a cause), he also exudes some less likable ones. In his pursuit for revenge, he can certainly come off as cold and even condescending at times — which doesn’t come as a huge surprise considering his upbringing and intellect.
11 Pisces: Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia)
If there needed to be an anime poster child for Pisces, it would have to be My Hero Academia’s Midoriya. Pisces are known for being emotional and empathetic, and those are two of Midoriya’s biggest personality traits.
His Pisces-like empathy and generosity are also what enable him to become a hero who helps others — he never gives up trying to lend a helping hand. Those are qualities all heroes should strive to embrace.
10 Aries: Naruto Uzumaki (Naruto)
Aries are brave and optimistic, and that’s part of why Naruto’s protagonist fits this zodiac sign so well. With a catchphrase like “Believe it!” and a tendency to run headfirst into danger, Naruto embraces all of Aries’ strengths — but he also falls prey to the sign’s weaknesses.
Because Aries — like Naruto — are direct and eager, they often lack the patience needed in trying situations. That lack of patience can also lead to impulsive decision-making, and that’s something Naruto has certainly been guilty of over the course of the anime as he jumps into fights without knowing all of the details.
9 Taurus: Shōyō Hinata (Haikyuu!!)
Much like Haikyuu!!’s main character, Hinata, those who claim Taurus as their zodiac sign are dedicated and hardworking. Viewers have seen Hinata embody both of these traits while on the volleyball court, but he’s also shown classic Taurus weaknesses playing the sport.
For example, Hinata has proved to be both stubborn and uncompromising, set in his ways on the court. These can be helpful features in moderate doses, but they can also lead to disappointment and conflict when they get out of hand.
8 Gemini: Emma (The Promised Neverland)
Playful, outgoing, curious and adaptable — these are all adjectives often used to describe Gemini, and they also fit The Promised Neverland’s Emma fairly well. Emma’s joy at helping and saving others and her ability to process new information and adjust her plans accordingly are on par with what one would expect from a Gemini.
Emma embodies less of typical Gemini flaws, but she has proven herself impulsive at times — and not everyone fits every zodiac trait to a T.
7 Cancer: Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Cancers are nothing if not loyal and protective of those they care about, and Fullmetal Alchemist’s Edward Elric could probably relate. After all, Ed travels to the end of Earth and back to save his little brother — and even his biggest mistakes were made for the sake of the people he loves.
Of course, anyone who’s witnessed Ed’s reaction to being called short can also attest to the fact that he can be a bit too sensitive at times, like Cancers often are. He also showcases classic Cancer moodiness — but the fans love him anyway.
6 Leo: Goku (Dragon Ball)
It wouldn’t be a list of anime protagonists without Dragon Ball’s Goku, and if the Saiyan had to be matched with a zodiac sign, Leo would fit best. Leos are strong, brave, and “dominate everything they set out to do.” That sounds like Goku, all right.
Unfortunately, Leos can also fall victim to their own pride. And while viewers have seen this more frequently from Vegeta, Goku’s competitiveness does suggest some pride, even if it’s not enough to be harmful.
5 Virgo: Shigeo Kageyama (Mob Psycho 100)
Kind, patient and reliable, Mob Psycho 100’s Shigeo boasts the positive personality traits that Virgos tend to have — and with everything he’s gone up against, it’s a good thing too.
Unfortunately, Mob doesn’t view himself quite as kindly as all that, because he also embodies the Virgo tendency to be overcritical of oneself. Perfectionist Virgos will be able to relate to Mob’s inability to see his own worth (and, with any luck, they’ll have similar journeys on the way to discovering it as well).
4 Libra: Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon)
Libras are both idealistic and diplomatic, two qualities that enable them to become good leaders. Their cleverness can also be useful in that endeavor, and all three of these traits certainly help Sailor Moon become the hero of her own story.
Sailor Moon also struggles in the same ways Libras do, battling indecisiveness, mood swings, and being egotistical at times. The good news is, if she can overcome these weaknesses, so can every other Libra facing them.
3 Scorpio: Eren Yeager (Attack On Titan)
Scorpios can be intense when it comes to their beliefs, (some would call them aggressive) and that’s why Attack on Titan’s Eren Yeager fits into this zodiac sign so well. He’s passionate about destroying the Titans and finding freedom, and like most Scorpios, he’ll never give up on achieving what he’s set out to do.
A Scorpio’s passion can also become their downfall in excess, and Eren does fall victim to being overly zealous as the anime continues. He represents both the positives and negatives of the sign.
2 Sagittarius: Tanjiro Kamado (Demon Slayer)
Sagittarius are both honest and optimistic, much like Demon Slayer’s Tanjiro Kamado. Even after all the terrible things he’s been through, Tanjiro remains upbeat and tries to do the right thing, showcasing Sagittarius strengths repeatedly on his journey.
But even if Tanjiro is an all-around good person, he does lack tact and patience at times, two flaws that only serve to further align him with Sagittarius as they often speak before thinking.
1 Capricorn: Yato (Noragami)
Unlike Sagittarius, Capricorns lean toward pessimism, and that’s one of several reasons Noragami’s Yato fits in with this zodiac sign. Although Yato exhibits positive Capricorn traits, like ambition and resourcefulness, he certainly tends to brood on the negative aspects of his circumstances.
Unfortunately for the anime’s other characters, Yato doesn’t showcase every Capricorn quality (ahem, responsibility), but he definitely has enough of them to fit the bill.
