To celebrate Batman Day, Zack Snyder shares an image of him wearing Ben Affleck’s Batman cowl, proving there are perks to directing a DC movie.
Zack Snyder has shared a new image of him wearing Ben Affleck’s Batman cowl. After the massive success of the MCU, Snyder was tasked with creating a cinematic universe of DC characters, starting with Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel in 2013. The director then went on to direct Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, before Joss Whedon took over the latter. Snyder’s first two DC films were controversial for various reasons, but Zack Snyder‘s Justice League, released earlier this year, has been praised by fans and critics alike.
One of the most controversial choices made in Snyder’s DC movies was casting Affleck as Batman. Nearly every actor to step into the role of the Caped Crusader has been criticized by DC fans at first, and Affleck got his fair share of hate online. Affleck’s version of Batman focused on an older Bruce Wayne, one who has been fighting crime for years and saw Robin killed by the Joker. Affleck’s Batman has become more appreciated over the years, with many now praising Affleck’s more mature and aged portrayal of the character. Affleck was at one point going to direct, write, and star in a solo Batman movie, but Warner Bros. recast Robert Pattinson in the role after Affleck dropped out.
To celebrate Batman Day, Snyder took to his Vero account to post an image of himself wearing the Batman cowl. A screenshot of Snyder’s original post can be seen below:
The story of how the Snyder Cut came to be is well-known at this point. After the movie’s release, there has been a massive outcry to Restore the Snyder-Verse, but Warner Bros. has shown no interest in continuing Snyder’s vision. The epilogue in the Snyder Cut gave a tease at what the next movie in the trilogy would have looked like, focusing on the Knightmare timeline where Darkseid takes control of Superman. Batman would have played a big role in the Justice League sequels and would have eventually been killed off to save Lois Lane from Darkseid. This, unfortunately, likely won’t ever get made, with Warner Bros. considering the Snyder Cut a dead end and Snyder currently not interested in making comic book movies.
Unlike Snyder, Affleck isn’t quite done with the DCEU. His reshoots for the Snyder Cut were believed to be Affleck’s final time playing the character; however, it was announced in August that he would be appearing as Batman alongside Michael Keaton in The Flash. It’s unknown how big of a role he will have in the movie, but given the actor’s past comments, it will likely be the end of his DCEU career. Affleck is most known for playing Batman at this point, and similarly, DC will always be a part of Snyder’s legacy. Even if he won’t get to finish his Justice League trilogy, it’s clear Snyder still enjoys engaging with fans and posting DC content. And as the above image makes clear, being the director of a DC movie has its perks.
